Sense-making • Relationships • Patterns
Math isn't about steps - it's about making sense of ideas, seeing relationships, and identifying patterns.
At Math Unscripted, I invite you to consider a different path for mathematics education.
For too long, math has been treated as a rigid script of rules and procedures. But real mathematical thinking doesn’t start with an algorithm—it starts with understanding.
I believe that anyone can learn math—to high levels—when the teaching connects with how they think. My approach is built on the role of the Guided Architect. Like an architect, I intentionally design the 'floor' and 'ceiling' of a lesson, ensuring every student has a solid place to start and a meaningful place to go.
Math Unscripted is about shifting the heavy lifting of thinking from the teacher to the learner. My work focuses on:
Designing Experiences: Creating opportunities for students to use reasoning and patterns to build their own understanding.
The Art of the Nudge: Using carefully crafted questions to point toward the path of understanding, without simply 'placing' the student there.
Managing the Struggle: Monitoring the line between productive struggle and frustration, stepping in with the right support before a learner shuts down.
It’s an invitation to flip the script:
From answers to reasoning
From following procedures to seeing relationships
From memorizing to sense-making
Because when math is about reasoning, relationships, and sense-making, every student can succeed.
