Math Unscripted unpacks the curriculum and brings together connected outcomes—or parts of outcomes—into carefully sequenced phases of learning. Students build understanding through hands-on experiences, visual models, discussion, and practice, making connections as they develop and apply mathematical ideas.
Hybrid Grade 8 Phases 1–3 are now available:
Phase 1: Squares, Square Roots & the Pythagorean Theorem
Phase 2: Probability, Fractions, Integers & Square Roots
Phase 3: Cubes, Cube Roots, Volume & Surface Area
Each phase includes a coordinated Teacher Guide, Student Workbook, and Blackline Masters, with investigations, practice, fluency activities, assessments, and answer keys.
The Hybrid Grade 8 program is designed specifically for Alberta’s 2026–2027 curriculum transition year. Students entering Grade 8 will begin the new Grade 8 curriculum without having completed the new Grade 7 curriculum.
This program develops selected Grade 7 prerequisites where students need them to understand and apply related Grade 8 content. Teachers receive one planned instructional sequence, without having to combine two separate programs.
The hybrid program does not cover every Grade 7 learning outcome or every Grade 8 curriculum component. The specific understandings, knowledge, and skills and procedures addressed—and the components outside its scope—are identified in the Teacher Guide.
I am working to complete all phases of Hybrid Grade 8 Math Unscripted during the 2026–2027 school year. Each phase is released as it is completed so teachers can begin using the resources while the remaining phases are developed.
With Phases 1–3 complete, development is moving to Phase 4, including cylinder volume and surface area.
Purchase phases individually or choose the Hybrid Grade 8 Growing Bundle for an overall saving. The bundle currently includes Phases 1–3 and will be updated as additional phases are released. Existing bundle purchasers receive those phases at no additional cost.
Purchasers of the Hybrid Grade 8 Growing Bundle will also receive the future updated full Grade 8 version at no additional charge.
Phase 3: Cubes, Cube Roots, Volume & Surface area
Entire Phase 3 documents, including teacher guide, student workbook and BLMs.
Phase 2: Probability, Fractions Integers & Square Roots
Entire Phase 2 documents, including teacher guide, student workbook and BLMs.
Phase 1: Perfect Squares, Square Roots, Pythagorean Theorem
Entire Phase 1 documents, including teacher guide, student workbook and BLMs.
How has AI been used in my work?
Here are the situations where I have used AI to help offload some of the editing work...
I use a program called Overleaf (not an AI tool) to format and produce my student workbooks, teacher guides, and black line masters. Because Overleaf uses LaTeX code, I use AI to help me with the code for creating the layout, diagrams, and other design elements.
Once I am done writing the content for a lesson, I also use AI as an additional reviewer to help identify possible typos, spelling and grammar issues, inconsistencies in wording or question structure, and potential errors in answer keys. It brings possible issues to my attention so that I can review them and make any necessary corrections.
The mathematical content, lesson design, instructional decisions, and final revisions remain my own.
